Full Bio
Jenn Rogien has emerged as an imaginative designer creating unique costumes for unconventional projects. She is currently designing the 4th season of HBO’s cultural phenomenon, “Girls,” where she creates effortless realistic costumes for a menagerie of unorthodox characters. Jenn has also returned to season 3 on Netflix’s break out hit original series, “Orange is the New Black,” created by “Weed’s” Jenji Kohan. For “Orange is the New Black,” she dresses an entire prison population and designs flashbacks to various periods from the early 1970s through 2012. Jenn brings a story driven mindset and a keen eye to the quirky characters she dresses and has demonstrated her versatility in collaborating with groundbreaking writers and directors including Lena Dunham, Jenji Kohan, Alex Timbers, Will Brumley, and Sam Gold.
While an undergraduate at Yale University, Jenn realized that her love of storytelling and clothes could be realized through the art of costume design. She was a fixture in the theater crowd and spent four years stage managing, producing, hanging lights, painting sets, costuming shows, and occasionally acting. During her tenure, Jenn oversaw the installation of the first costume shop in the Dramat’s rehearsal space.
While Jenn started her life in NYC working in the buying offices of Saks Fifth Avenue, her love of theater persisted. In her off-hours she helped Alex Timbers found his theater company “Les Freres Corbusier,” first producing “president Harding is a Rock Star” and then designing costumes for the company’s next 3 productions, including the cult hit, “A Very Merry Unauthorized Children’s Scientology Pageant.” “Pageant” earned LFC an Obie Award in 2004. After 3 years divided between the corporate world and theatrical design, Jenn returned to school to study fashion design and construction at Parsons School of Design.
After Parsons, Jenn Juggled sewing for an indie fashion label and working as an assistant to film director Steve Shainberg. When Shainberg’s 1950s period movie “Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus” went into production, Jenn shifted into the costume department. She Continued in costumes as a production assistant on high profile feature films, including Julie Taymor’s 1960s period musical “Across the Universe” and Disney’s modern princess tale, “Enchanted.” Jenn stepped up to Assistant Costume Designer on Tina Fey’s charming comedy, “Baby Mama” before transitioning into TV, where she assisted costume designer Daniel Lawson on the fashion-driven, “Lipstick Jungle.” Under Lawson’s mentorship, Jenn worked as an Assistant and Associate designer on NBC’s short lived but visually stunning “Kings,” Hbo’s indie cult hit “Bored to Death,” and CBS’ stylish legal smash, “The Good Wife.”
Of her work on “Girls,” The New York Times applauded the costume design of the hit show saying “The Clothes Make The ‘Girls!’”Glamour.com says “Rogien is behind some of our favorite looks to ever grace the small screen…and her work on “Girls” is creating a whole new genre of hyper-realistic, kinda-gritty on-screen style.” Vogue.com calls her work “Seamless.”
For fall/winter 2014 Jenn collaborated with Sorel, a premium boot brand, for the fourth installment of the Sorel style video series featuring Jenn curating fall and winter looks with real women from around the U.S.
In her role as GAP’s first ever Styld.by expert, Jenn hosted in-store events and appeared in a video series as part of their “Back to Blue” global marketing campaign for Fall 2013. In the video series, Jenn shared how as a costume designer she uses clothes to help bring characters to life and how everyone can express their personalities and tell their own story through their clothing choices. Jenn also served as the Style and Fit Expert for aerie lingerie for Spring 2013.
Jenn is the 2012 9th Annual Style Awards TV Costume Designer of the Year, and was nominated for a Costume Designer Guild award in 2012 for her work on “Girls.” Entertainment Weekly named Jenn in its roster of ‘Brain Trust’ influencers in its 2012 Entertainers of the Year issue, and also included her as one of the top 50 “New Hollywood” Entertainers and Creatives in August 2013.
Jenn is based in Brooklyn, NY, where she gardens on her roof and cans the harvest.
