Patrick Baudry is a French astronaut. Baudry is also a former lieutenant colonel in the French Air Force. He holds a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering from the French Air Force Academy of Salon de Provence.
In 1985, he became the second French citizen in space when he flew on NASA’s Space Shuttle mission STS-51-G, which was the fifth flight of space shuttle Discovery.
On March 23, 1984, the first French-American space flight was decided, and he started training at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. After one year of training, he was assigned to the Mission 51-E and then to the Mission 51-G — the mission that would make him the second French citizen to enter space. The launch of Mission 51-G took place on June 17, 1985, from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The main objective of the mission was to deliver three satellites in orbit. Baudry had the responsibility of a scientific and medical program for French and American research laboratories. After 112 orbits, Discovery landed on June 24, 1985.
For his space and flying experience, Baudry received a Legion of Honour award, the highest French order of merit.
