Ann Dowd was the recipient of both the 2017 Emmy Award as well as that year’s Critics’ Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her acclaimed performance as “Aunt Lydia” on Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, an adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel. She has also been nominated for a Golden Globe Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, and Critics Choice Award for her work on the show. She received another Emmy nomination for her performance as “Patti Levin” on the beloved HBO series The Leftovers, created by Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta.

In 2013, Dowd was the recipient of Best Supporting Actress from the National Board of Review for her performance as “Sandra” in Craig Zobel’s controversial psychological thriller Compliance, inspired by true events. She was also nominated for an Independent Spirit Award and Critic’s Choice Award for the role. In 2018, she had a record five films showing at the Sundance Film Festival— Ari Aster’s A24 horror hit Hereditary, Bart Leyton’s American Animals, Silas Howard’s A Kid Like Jake, Christina Choe’s Nancy, and Sebastian Silva’s Tyrel.

Dowd’s television career has been highlighted by an acclaimed performance alongside Frances McDormand in Olive Kitteridge, recurring roles on Good BehaviorMasters of SexQuarryNothing SacredJudging AmyThird WatchFreaks and Geeks, and memorable appearances on True DetectiveLouieGirlsHouseChicago HopeThe X-FilesNYPD Blue and 9 different characters within the Law & Order franchise. Her film work includes A Kid Like Jake, Captain Fantastic, Collateral Beauty, St. Vincent, Bachelorette, Side Effects, Flags of Our Fathers, The Informant!, Marley & Me, The Manchurian Candidate, Garden State and Philadelphia.

Dowd has starred on stage in plays including The Normal Heart, Doubt, Blood from a Stone, The Woolgather, and Night is a Room; as well as on Broadway in The Seagull with Kristen Scott Thomas and Carey Mulligan, Taking Sides with Elizabeth Marvel, and Candida alongside Mary Steenburgen.

Currently, Dowd is filming Ben Wheatley’s upcoming romantic thriller Rebecca, due out next year.
