Caterina Scorsone is a Canadian actress best known for her roles in the Lifetime crime drama series 1-800-Missing and ABC’s medical dramas Private Practice and Grey’s Anatomy.
Scorsone had her acting breakthrough after landing the leading role in the Lifetime crime drama series 1-800-Missing from 2003 to 2006. She played the part of Jess Mastriani, a young woman who sees missing persons in visions.
In 2010, Scorsone joined the cast of Shonda Rhimes’ drama series Private Practice in the recurring role of Amelia Shepherd, the sister of Derek Shepherd from Grey’s Anatomy. In March 2014, Scorsone returned to Grey’s Anatomy after a 3-year absence as a recurring guest star. In June of the same year, it was announced that she was promoted to series regular status for the show’s 11th season.
Additionally, Scorsone is a Down Syndrome Awareness advocate. Her daughter, Paloma Michaela was born with Down Syndrome. As a result, Scorsone’s concept of motherhood and love changed, which she spoke about on an episode of a podcast called “Motherly.”
While on the podcast, she opened up about her journey, sharing “this simple voice came to me where I was like, ‘I don’t know what to do — oh, I’m supposed to keep her safe and I’m supposed to make her feel loved,’ ” she said. “And suddenly my understanding of my job as a mother completely distilled and opened.”
