Approaching her 18th birthday, Charlotte scored 12 centuries in a single season and in one World Cup game broke one-day international (ODI) records by scoring 173 not out. In terms of runs, she has achieved a massive 5,885 in ODIs and 1,673 in Tests, second only to the great Jan Brittin. In terms of caps, Edwards has 23 for Test cricket, 87 for Twenty20 matches and 188 for ODIs.
Despite sustaining aserious cruciate ligament injury in 2001, Charlotte bounced back and four years later moved up from her position as England’s vice-captain to captain. In 2009, this motivational speaker led her team to retain the Ashes, losing just one game in the entire tournament, and won the urn again in later years.
Edwards – who plays her county cricket for Kent, where she became captain in 1999 – was given an MBE for her services to cricket and joined the committee of the International Cricket Council, the global governing body for cricket, and The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), the owner of Lord’s cricket ground and the guardian of the laws of cricket.
