Full Bio

A successful sportswoman and Olympian, Helen Richardson-Walsh is famed for playing hockey for the Great Britain Women’s Field Hockey team and for a range of domestic teams. Throughout her career, Helen has built expertise in the psychology of high performing teams, which she now shares as a speaker for a range of corporate and sporting events. Also highly passionate about inclusion, after being supported with her sexuality and mental health throughout her time in hockey, Helen is a fantastic choice when looking for a sports speaker with expertise on mental health, diversity and inclusion.

Helen’s interest in hockey blossomed when she began playing for West Bridgford Hockey Club, aged just seven. This love increased, and she has now led a career playing hockey both nationally and internationally – for Great Britain and England Women’s Hockey Teams. Helen has been capped 293 times internationally, and at her time of retirement, was recognised as the fifth most-capped GB player in the history of women’s hockey. First capped when she was 17 years of age, Helen has now claimed victories including Gold at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Bronze at the 2012 London Olympic Games, Silver at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, Bronze at the 2006 and 2010 Commonwealth Games, Gold at the 2015 EuroHockey Nations Championships and Gold at the 2022 Champions Challenge.

As well as international hockey, Helen has also enjoyed a domestic hockey career, playing for teams such as West Bridgford Hockey Club, HC Den Bosch, HC Bloemendaal, Cambridge City Hockey Club and East Grinstead Hockey Club. Outside of hockey, Helen has dedicated her work to supporting charities, in 2012 becoming the Sky Sports Living for Sport Athlete Mentor. She has also acted as a Patron of the Proud Lilywhites and an Ambassador for Access Sports, along with acting as an Athlete Role Model for the Youth Olympic Games. She has also turned her hand to commentary work, providing hockey commentary and analysis at the 2018 Commonwealth Games for both Radio 5 Live and BBC Sport.

Named Player of the Year by the Hockey Writers’ Club in 2009 and 2010, the Marjorie Pollard Salver three times and BOA Athlete of the Year 2009 by Great Britain Hockey, Helen is now a popular choice as a sports or Olympic speaker for a range of corporate events. Having recently completed a degree in Psychology at the Open University, Helen is booked to share her expertise on the psychology of a high performing team, along with team values and creating winning cultures. She is also highly passionate about diversity and inclusion, speaking openly on her sexuality and mental health. Encouraging inclusivity in both the workplace and society, Helen shares the importance of diverse and inclusive culture and what an inclusive environment can mean for personal performance.
