Sabaah Folayan is an filmmaker, activist, and award-winning storyteller who uses written and visual media to bring a fresh perspective to the urgent questions of our time.
Folayan made her directorial debut at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival with Whose Streets?, which chronicles the experiences of activists living in Ferguson, Missouri when Michael Brown Jr. was killed. The film has been supported by the Sundance Documentary Film Program, Tribeca Film Institute, Ford Foundation, MacArthur and more.
She honed strategic planning skills in the non-profit and grassroots sectors before becoming a filmmaker.Folayan was a lead organizer of the New York City Millions March, the December 2014 demonstration protesting police killings in the wake of Eric Garner’s death; attendance estimates ranged from 12,000 to 50,000 participants. Prior to traveling to Ferguson, Folayan worked with formerly incarcerated people, conducting interviews she has described as having a major influence on her approach to storytelling.
She attended Columbia University as a premedical student and graduated with a degree in biology.
