Full Bio
Sophie Grégoire Trudeau is an engaged advocate for gender equality and a mother of three young children. Over the past 15 years, she has been involved with a variety of causes as a speaker and mentor, including causes for teenage self-esteem, women and girls’ rights and freedoms, eating disorders and mental health.
Fluently bilingual, Sophie was an entertainment reporter for the daily Showbiz segment on LCN. She also contributed to entertainment segments on Salut Bonjour Weekend, and Clin D’Oeil and Bec et Museau for TVA. As well, she co-hosted Escales de Rêves on Canal Évasion and hosted Canal Z’s Teksho, a series about the interaction of show business and technology. She also co-hosted morning shows on CKMF Radio and contributed to the daily program Coup de Pouce on Radio-Canada.
Sophisticated, intelligent and passionate, Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau had a unique ability to get to the heart of every story, and easily identifies with the human side of every person that she interviews. As eTalk’s Quebec Correspondent, Grégoire-Trudeau provided comprehensive coverage of Quebec-based celebrities and stories, but also takes interest in the social causes celebrities take on.
Sometimes the subject of entertainment headlines herself, Sophie has adjusted to the spotlight gracefully since she married Justin Trudeau in 2005. In 2006, she was back in the headlines again, but as a spokesperson for the BACA Foundation, which supports the BACA eating disorder clinic in Quebec. She also made headlines when visiting one of the world’s poorest nations. Her trip to Ethiopia, together with Mother-in-Law Margaret Trudeau, helped to provide clean water to those most in need.
As a mother, she has associated herself with organizations that support a variety of women’s issues. Sophie was the spokesperson for ‘The Weekend to End Breast Cancer’, and has also been involved in the Women’s Heart and Stroke Association, the Canadian Cancer Association, the Vagina Monologues, and was a key speaker at LifeFest 2008.
Grégoire is actively involved in charity work, volunteering for several Canadian charities and non-profit organizations, often by acting as a spokeswoman or hosting events. Her causes include Sheena’s Place and BACA, both of which assist those suffering from eating disorders; La Maison Bleue, a drop-in center for at-risk pregnant mothers; Dove’s “Pay Beauty Forward” campaign and Self-Esteem Fund; Girls for the Cure; the Canadian Cancer Association; the Canadian Mental Health Association; the Women’s Heart and Stroke Association; and WaterCan.
As part of her work with WaterCan, which aims to alleviate global poverty by providing clean water to underdeveloped countries, Grégoire traveled to Ethiopia in October 2006 with her mother-in-law, Margaret Trudeau, who is the honorary president of the organization. Their trip was featured in a CTV documentary, “A Window Opens: Margaret and Sophie in Ethiopia”, which aired in May 2007.
As part of her advocacy, she works as an official spokesperson for Plan Canada’s “Because I am a Girl” initiative and the FitSpirit Foundation. She was named influencer for the Deliver for Good campaign of Women Deliver. Sophie is always looking to deepen the conversation around mental and physical well-being and is now the National ambassador and ally to We Well-being to bring awareness on mental health.
In 2013, Sophie received the UN Women National Committee Canada Recognition Award for her contribution to human rights. She received the 2018 Humanitarians Award from the United Nations Association of New York.
She was honoured as the 100th member of Nature Canada’s Women for Nature initiative for her support of nature and the outdoors and continues to be committed to sharing her passion for nature with Canadians as Honourary Guide for Families for Parks Canada.
Fully bilingual, Sophie studied Commerce at McGill University, and finished her B.A. in Communications at the Université de Montréal. She completed another degree at the École de radio et de télévision Promédia in Montreal. After her studies, she worked in sales and advertising before becoming a television and radio reporter.
