A member of the 2004 USA gold winning Olympic team, Swintayla Marie Cash knows how set goals to ensure success. Swin attributes her success to the strong relationship she shares with her mother. In addition to her athletic achievements, she started her own company and is an inspiring speaker on overcoming adversity, setting and attaining goals, empowering oneself with knowledge, and winning as a mindset.
After winning national championships with the University of Connecticut in 2000 and 2002, Cash added a WNBA title in 2003 with the Detroit Shock. She made a terrific WNBA debut in 2002, finishing third in the Rookie of the Year voting behind fellow Team USA members Sue Bird (her college teammate) and Tamika Catchings. In 2003 she started all 33 regular-season game for the Shock, averaging 16.6 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.6 assists and making the All-Star Game. Cash was even better in the playoffs, averaging 17.5 points in the Shock’s title run.
UConn went 136-9 during Cash’s four years in school and 39-0 her senior year, when she, Bird and fellow Olympic team member Diana Taurasi paced the squad. An All-American as a senior, Cash was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2002 Final Four. A three-time All-Big East selection, Cash ranks eighth on UConn’s career scoring list with 1,583 points.
She played in the 2003 WNBA All-Star Game and won the gold medal with the U.S. women’s basketball team at the 2004 Olympic Games. She also played in the 2012 Olympic Games.
On February 19, 2008 Cash was traded to the Seattle Storm for the draft rights of No. 4 pick in the 2008 WNBA draft.
Currently involved in many different charity programs, Swin is part of the WNBA “Mind. Body. Spirit. Program,” which is the centerpiece of the WNBA’s community related initiative. The program has two critical themes: Healthy, Fit Families, Positive Self-Image; and Breast Health Awareness.
Swin has done speaking engagements on behalf of the March of Dimes, and also taped a Public Service Announcement with Detroit Shock Head Coach, Bill Laimbeer. Swin continues to make motivational speeches at Boys & Girls Clubs and urban areas.
Swin sponsors two programs in her hometown of McKeesport, PA: the McKeesport Men’s Softball League which she has sponsored for the past two years, and a $1,000 Scholarship for a young woman who excels in basketball and makes a difference in people’s lives.
