Full Bio

At the peak of her career, Gail Emms won gold at the 2006 World Championships in Madrid, 2004 European Championships in Geneva, and a silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games, all three partnered with Nathan Robertson. In 2002, she won bronze at the Commonwealth Games whilst partnered with Joanne Good, and gold whilst representing England in the mixed team event.

In the following year, re-partnered with Nathan Robertson, she secured the World Badminton Grand Prix title. Whilst competing in the English National Badminton Championships, Gail dominated the mixed doubles three times, and the women’s doubles two times. Gail’s early life consisted of her studying a BSc (Hons) in Sports Science from Kingston University, before becoming a full-time professional badminton player, thanks to the national lottery-funded grants paid to her by UK Sport.

Between 2004 and 2008, Gail proved her athletic ability at both the Olympic and Commonwealth Games. Partnered with Robertson, she defeated Jonas Rasmussen and Rikke Olsen of Denmark to take the silver medal. Only two years later, Gail secured another silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in the team event, bronze whilst paired with Donna Kellogg for the women’s doubles and gold from the mixed doubles with Robertson. In the same year, Gail and Nathan Robertson bagged another gold at the IBF World Championships. Taking to the Olympic stage once again in 2006, this time in Beijing, Gail only just missed out on a medal before retiring.

Since retirement, Gail turned her attention to badminton coaching, motivational speaking, media activities and TV commentary. As a sports commentator, she has presented for BBCSky and BT Sports. With the intention of empowering female players and encouraging mixed pairs, she has also coached the sporting stars of tomorrow.

As a speaker, the Olympian discusses performance, teamwork and gender issues, and has worked with the likes of Ashridge Business SchoolSainsbury’s and the Thames Valley Police. Presenting to prominent clients, she explores the treacherous journey to success and how to not just achieve peak performance, but maintain it.
